A Most Unusual Olympics Ends with a Fitting Closing Ceremony
The 2020 Summer Olympics, delayed by a year due to the global pandemic, came to a close with the Olympic Closing Ceremony in Tokyo on Aug. 8. The ceremony featured speeches, performances, parades, and tributes—all of the usual elements of an Olympic closing ceremony.
Despite the challenges of hosting the Games during a pandemic, Tokyo put on a memorable Games and a fitting closing ceremony that celebrated the world's best athletes and the spirit of the Games.
The ceremony began with a video montage of highlights from the Games, followed by speeches from International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach and Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee President Seiko Hashimoto.
Bach praised the athletes for their resilience and determination in competing in the Games during such challenging times. He also thanked the people of Japan for their support and hospitality.
Hashimoto thanked the volunteers, staff, and everyone else who helped make the Games a success. She also expressed her hope that the Games will inspire future generations to pursue their dreams.
The ceremony also featured performances from Japanese musicians and dancers. The ceremony concluded with the traditional handover of the Olympic flag to Paris, which will host the next Summer Games in 2024.
